Literally meaning "Ingres' violin", the French phrase is an idiom for "pastime".
The model was the famous Kiki de Montparnasse (born Alice Prin, 1901-1951). A nightclub singer, actress, memoirist, and painter, as well as muse and lover of celebrated artists, "The Queen of Montparnasse" is an icon of the 1920's Paris.
